WHO WAS TRANKY DOO?

Learn the 1st Tranky Doo then a 1940s original jazz routine choreographed by the Ambassador of Swing, Frankie Manning inspired by a chorus girl from Chicago nicknamed Tranky Doo. The Tranky Doo often performed by his fellow Congaroos and Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers like Al Minns, Pepsi Bethel, Leon James, Tops and Wilda; highlighted in Mura Dehn’s The Spirit Moves: A History of Black Social Dance on Film, 1900-1986.

Dawn Hampton was an American cabaret and jazz singer, saxophonist, songwriter, and iconic NYC dancer. In this class, we will teach you moves and rhythms we have learned through our interactions with her. Inspired by Dawn’s iconic legacy, we will help you to find your own style.

NYLX does it big with our internationally known dance instructors, award winning jazz and blues artists, while paying homage to our lindy hop past. We will light up your New York City dance experience with amazing dance workshops, live bands each night, plus you can meet and dance with the elders, and take historical Harlem tours.
